May 8 at 10 am. That is when I will marry Carol. If you can make it, you are welcome to come.
Saturday night it snowed. Sunday it melted. Monday we had a salad made from stuff collected from our wee tiny garden. I think most things survived the cold weather, though a few tomato plants and the egg plant plants are still iffy. With any luck it won't snow again this year. It has been a cold icky winter this year.
My lap top dropped last week as well. I have a replacement hard drive on its way, and I hope that is all that is required to get it going again. I miss being able to sit on the couch and read my mail/reader and check out the weather.
Other than that, it has been a quiet week, though snow, laptop, wedding date seems like quite a lot.
A record of my life updated at random times and for random reasons.

The last few weeks have been filled with outdoor stuff. My garden is looking like a garden now. I think I have planted everything I will plant for the spring. Some of it is not likely to survive the heat of the summer (parsley, cilantro, broccoli, radishes, tomatoes, peppers), ok, so that seems like most of it. However, I have had a lot of fun going out twice a day to look at the garden. I am sure that the novelty will wear off soon enough, but for now it is fun. The best part of the raised beds that I have built is that there are no weeds yet. I suspect they will arrive soon enough as seeds from weeds land on the soil and begin to grow, but compared to the farm this is a delight to work with. Today I need to go out and finish putting some netting over the garden to discourage grackles from consuming all my tomatoes and such like.
Yesterday we had a freezer delivered. It is a 7 cu ft version and appears to be the ideal size for us. We can put our frozen veggies into it and still have room for ice in our in-house fridge/freezer. I also picked up some shelving from Lowes, and I hope to get the garage sorted out a little better than it currently is. At the moment it is a complete mess. Ahh, the pleasures of spring organizing.
Monday I hurt my left foot while mowing down the weeds in the front and back yards. It has only been two weeks or so since I last mowed the darn things, but they grow so quickly, and our lawn is nothing but weeds so it looks bad quickly. My foot is improving, but still hurts a little. A stretched tendon or something I suspect. It has been a high injury month for me. Cut the tip of one finger with a mandoline and a thumb with a knife while slicing onions. Everything heals nicely though.
The Bradford Pear across the street is going from white to green. One of the nicest views in early spring are these trees. A photo of them in full bloom can be found here. The dogwoods are blooming out in the wild as well. It is quite pleasant to be driving along and seeing the splash of flowering white in the bush.
I am in the midst of spring break at the moment, which is a little scary as it means the semester is nearly half over! Soon I will have completed my first year of library school!
Carol and I had our first pickup from a local veggie coop. It comes from a religious based organization and offers a bunch of veggies and, if we ate it, cow flesh etc. I have not found the people involved to be all that welcoming, and I am not sure the hamper we relieved is really worth the money paid. We are going to persist for a little while to see if things improve.
My trip to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens was fun. I was a little disappointed in the gardens themselves as they do not measure up to the quality that was present in Raleigh and area. Heck, they don't even have a catalpa :). It is quite small. I did enjoy my walk, and the tulip trees, but I still miss the Raleigh arboretum. I may try out the Dallas gardens one of these days...
I am also thinking about checking out state parks. I would like to get a feel for the area that I was unable to get in NC. I think there are quite a few within a two-hour drive that I could check out. Make for a nice outing some days and maybe give me some exercise.

I went to the Fort Worth Botanical gardens this morning. Photos can be found here.
I am off to get some snoozing (combination of time change and getting up too early and staying up too late have left me exhausted), and will do a more detailed update later today or early tomorrow.
Until then, you can gaze jealously (if you are in certain climes where green is still months away) at my garden.

Today was the edible festival at a local greenhouse. I attended a short talk by the greenhouse manager/master gardener, and decided that I needed to add some stuff to my plots. Tomatoes, dill, lettuces (too lazy to wait for the seed to spring from the ground), broccoli, spinach, eggplant, basil. I think that covers everything. So, now I need to obsessively watch the over night temps to make sure they do not hit the brr point. If they do, I can cover things, so I should be safe enough.
It sure feels weird to be planting so early in the year. To add to the weirdness, I had to mow my front lawn as the weeds were a foot high (grew like that in the last 4-5 days)!! Planting and lawn mowing all in the same day, must be spring.
The weather was not bad this past week. Still mostly gray, but there were a few sunny days so I won't complain this week. I am looking forward to the next few weeks as temps should begin to sneak up on 70 fairly soon!
Not much else going on, it has been fairly quiet here lately. Allergies are bugging me and Daph a bit right now, but tis the season and all that.

It is a beautiful spring day (58 F right now). We took a dissertation break this morning and ended up at Calloway's. As anyone will tell you, walking away from a greenhouse without anything is impossible, we left with some veggies, some herbs, and a cyclomen (not pictured). I have labeled my garden plots and hopefully will be able to show some growth over the next few months. It is fun to get dirty hands in February. :)

A huge confluence of events occurs today!
1. It's garbage day!
2.It's my birthday!!
I am going to spend my birthday doing some gardening. There are still a few small things I need to take care of in the back yard (we ignore the front for the moment) including cutting back the purple fountain grass. In the boxes, I need to finish setting one up (laths and poles), and I will be doing some planting today as well.
It is the season to plant leafy and root crops, so today I will plant lettuce, spinach, brocoli (not sure if this one will work, it may get to hot to quick for it), radishes, carrots, beets, swish chard, and dill. Tis the season to experiment, so it will be interesting to see what grows and what doesn't. It is a little early still, but I feel it is necessary to do some gardening on my birthday simply because I have never done so before.
As for a celebration, I will likely go to a local Indian restaurant (Kokila) for supper. Later I will have a cherry and almond cookie with some vanilla flavored coconut ice-cream. Much as I like the soy ice-cream, I can't eat it anymore. The cookies are great, I made them last night and was forced to test their quality. All of the cookies I have tried from Isa's vegan cookies cookbook have been amazing. If you are looking for a cool cookie cookbook, you can't go wrong with that one.
Oh, I will likely make a bit more salsa today as well. I made a batch last night, and accidently made it too hot to consume comfortably. So, I figure if I make another batch without heat, then mix the two, I should have a consumable condiment. I am making my own salsa as I am not pleased with the kinds I have found at the local stores.
It has been a long, gray winter. I am tired of the cold, the snow, the wet, the dingy gray, the garbage, the cold, the gray. I really need some warmer weather, some sunshine, some bright green, and some flowers. Texas has too many seasons for me (I would gladly lose winter).
Happy birthday too me!
